Expectations for Karen's students:
Practice TimeThorough practice is expected a minimum of 4-5 times a week. We will spend time at each lesson considering best methods of practicing different techniques or individual pieces.
PerformancesThere is an annual spring and fall studio-wide recital. All students are expected to perform at both of these recitals.
Parental InvolvementParents are invited to sit in on lessons, ask questions, and talk to Karen regularly about their student's progress. Parents are also vital in making sure practice happens regularly at home.
CancellationsRegular attendance is expected. If illness arises, Karen asks for text or call for a cancellation at least six hours in advance of the lesson. Make-up lessons or online lessons are possible.

Curricula:
Karen uses a variety of curricula for instruction depending on age, music background, and whether the student has evidenced interest in ear-training or sight-reading. She also recognizes that some students may be transferring from other teachers and is open to finishing out a level in an alternative piano curriculum if that is the family's choice. Karen always uses all the books of a curriculum to make sure that technique and theory is provided in addition to lessons and performance. She also tries to make sure that students are performing different pieces at a recital even if they are working from the same curriculum books. Karen introduces extra pieces as befits the students' interests, whether holiday-themed, in a jazz or blues style, or Disney. While Karen's goal is to provide a firm music foundation, she also wants the student to have fun practicing at the keyboard!
